and anti-american violence overseas there is late word tonight that the fbi has exposed an apparent homegrown terror plot in chicago involving an american teenager. the feds arresting an 18-year-old man who they say tried to detonate a car bomb outside a chicago bar. what he apparently didn't know was that the fbi was in on it from the start and the bomb was a fake. nbc's john yang is in our chicago newsroom with more. was anyone put at risk here? >> reporter: law enforcement officials stressed to nbc news that no one was ever at risk. the bomb was a phony. the suspect, 18-year-old adel daoud had no weapons training, no explosives training and is not a member or connected with any terrorist group, international terrorist group. according to this 35-page criminal complaint he was spotted by the fbi online talking jihad and talking about attacking americans. an undercover fbi agent got in touch with him. in the course of their discussions he came up with this plot to attack a target in chicago. and last night, according to the fbi, he was given a phony bomb, drove it in a jeep cheroke

units of marines fan out to these countries, fbi agents are being sent to libya to investigate the murder of the american ambassador there and degr three other americans were killed. the fbi. we think of the fbi as a domestic agency, it's the fbi that's part of the u.s. government that has the authority to investigate deaths of americans in all other parts of the world. fbi did it in the embassy bombings in kenya, in tanzania in 1998, and the "uss cole" bombing in 2000 and mumbai bombings in india in 2008 and now the fbi is investigating in libya or at least we're told they are on their way. the fbi being dispatched to libya is yet another reminder what happened in libya appears to be a different kettle of fish than what is happening at all the other embassies and u.s. sites around the world today. the attack that killed the u.s. ambassador appears to be a coordinated military assault by well-armed men who arrived at the scene quite separately from any civilian protest. given the militant groups known to operate in the area of benghazi and the types of attacks for which those g

. it was an fbi sting and abc's chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the latest this morning from washington. pierre, what do we know? >> reporter: good morning, dan. the fbi said the the suspect had deadly intentions. according to authorities adel daoud, age 18, prayed that he would kill as many people as possible before he parked his car outside a bar in chicago on friday night at 7:00 p.m. the fbi said with the bar full of people at one of the busiest times of the evening, daoud stood a block away and squeezed a trigger he thought would detonate the bomb, but as you said, it was a sting. the bomb was a fake. and daoud was arrested. >> pierre, how did police find this guy? and what happened then in terms of the investigation? >> reporter: fbi officials said daoud came to their attention last october after he began posting violent messages on the internet. a few months later, fbi uncovered agents posing as radicals contacted daoud. discussions allegedly began about jihad by the summer as daoud was put in contact with another fbi agent posing as a terrorist and allegedly began pla

know, jarks, have you followed this -- everybody is waiting for the fbi to go to benghazi to find the people that killed our ambassador. but the fbi will not go to benghazi. they are in tripoli at our embassy there which has good security. they will not go to benghazi because the security is so awful. even now, 12, 14 days after the attack. so you have got to know that these al qaeda terrorist crazies, they knew that, and they were gunning for our ambassador and the white house was informed of it right away and they are covering that up, jack jacobs. >> it is absolutely true. now it's known the fbi is not only in benghazi, they are not going either. indeed it is even worse than that. there is a large number of witnesses whom they could interview in benghazi who will not go to tripoli to get interviewed by the fbi. they are very much concerned about their names being released, their families being in trouble. if they testify. they are not going anywhere. the fbi is not going to give any information from people who were on the ground and know what happened in benghazi. >> jennifer r
